Using Templates

For Google Apps for Education sites, the default landing tab is your district's templates. If you have no district templates, this page will be empty. Don't despair, there are many public template available on the Public tab. You can preview a template before using it. And anything in a template may be customized once you have selected it as you get a copy of the document to modify as you want.

Find under New document from within a document

This is the most difficult to find, but it does not require installing anything. You must first have a Google document open. Under the File menu, select New and navigate to "From template..."

Public Templates

There are public templates which you can easily customize to make your own. See if you can find a template for something you do or teach. Try searching for one of these terms: lab report, rubric, homework, resume, school calendar, resume, certificate.

Submit a Template

A user can submit a template to the gallery. It is uploaded from Google Drive. Consider the types of documents which would be time saving to have in a template gallery for your district. Also consider a standardized naming structure. Should the file name begin with the type of document or possibly with a course or teacher's name? Would a potential name be "Lab Report - Mr. Mann" or "Presentation Template - US History"? Remember, everyone within your domain has access to this template. You probably don't want to upload school letterhead unless you want a student to be able to access the letterhead template. It may take as long as 10 minutes before a file you have selected shows in the template gallery. Read more about submitting templates from Google Support.

Make it Easier to Find Templates

Add "Drive Template Gallery" as an App

It is recommended that you install the Drive Template Gallery from the app store. This puts a link into the new menu choice and on the launcher. It makes it easier to find the "From templates..." button. I'd recommend installing the Drive Template Gallery onto all the Chromebooks by your Google administrator. If this is installed you'll find it as displayed in the screenshot on the right. You'll also find it as an icon in your launcher.

Add "From template" to Google Drive menu
Under New => More => click + Connect more apps... and search for templates. Now "From template..." will be in your menu.
